Frequently asked questions
01. Trailer Basics & Towing
What is an overland travel trailer?
An overland travel trailer is built for people who want to go farther than paved roads and crowded campgrounds. Think of it as a rugged, off-road capable camper designed to follow your tow vehicle into backcountry areas, forest service roads, and remote landscapes. Unlike traditional RVs that are designed for highways and RV parks, overland trailers are built with stronger frames, better materials, higher ground clearance, and heavy-duty suspension systems. The focus is on durability and reliability, so the trailer can handle rough roads, vibration, and years of real use — not just occasional vacations. They also tend to be more self-sufficient, with power systems, water storage, and design features that allow for comfortable off-grid camping without relying on hookups.
Bottom line: An overland trailer is built to go farther, handle more, and last longer — so you can focus on the adventure instead of worrying about your equipment.
What kind of tow vehicle do I need to tow an Arkto Campers trailer?
Arkto Campers trailers are designed to be lighter and easier to tow than most overland travel trailers.
For Arkto Campers trailers:
- G12: recommended towing capacity of 5,000 lbs or greater
- C10: recommended towing capacity of 3,500 lbs or greater
Always confirm your vehicle’s towing capacity, payload, and hitch limits before towing.
What equipment do I need to buy to safely tow an Arkto Campers trailer?
You will typically need:
- a hitch installed on your tow vehicle that is rated for a minimum of 7,000 lbs.
- a ball mount receiver rated for a minimum of 600 lbs of tongue weight. We will provide the tow vehicle side yoke for your receiver.
- an electronic brake controller installed in your vehicle. Some vehicles come with this already installed from the factory.
- a 7-way trailer wiring connection/plug at your hitch.
Arkto Campers trailers are designed to be used with standard towing setups and do not require any specialized equipment.
02. Construction, Materials & Durability
Is there any wood in the construction of your overland trailers?
No. There is not a single piece of wood used in the Arkto Campers overland trailer construction. Our overlanding trailers are built with fully composite structural sandwich panels, eliminating the risk of rot or moisture damage common in traditional travel trailers. This no-wood construction method also covers the interior of the trailer. All of the cabinets are either aluminum or composite.
How are Arkto Campers overland trailers constructed?
The walls of our trailers are built using a multi-step composite construction process. The walls themselves are a sandwich-style composite panel. The skins are made from fiberglass impregnated with thermoplastic. Much stronger and lighter than traditional fiberglass sheets. The 1.5-inch thick insulation is XPS foam, with a minimum insulation value of R7.
The walls are all bonded together with structural sealant adhesive, and strategically riveted together aluminum brackets. Once all adhesives have cured, we then install our custom aluminum exo-skeleton that is both bonded and riveted to the exterior of the trailer with waterproof rivets.
This process creates an extremely strong, and durable structure, designed for long-term off-road use.
What is composite construction and why does it matter in an overland trailer?
Composite construction uses layered materials like fiberglass and structural foam instead of wood. In an overland travel trailer, this results in a lighter, stronger, and more moisture-resistant structure that performs better in harsh environments compared to traditional RV construction.
How durable are Arkto Campers trailers for off-road and long-term use?
Arkto Campers overland trailers are built specifically for durability and comfort. With composite construction, a galvanized steel chassis, and reinforced structural design, they are engineered to handle vibration, rough terrain, and long-distance travel without the common wear issues seen in standard travel trailers.
Are your trailers certified for safety and road use?
Yes. All Arkto Campers overland travel trailers are fully certified for road use in both Canada and the United States.
They meet Transport Canada and DOT (USA) requirements and are built to CSA Z-240 (Canada) and NFPA 1192 (USA) safety standards. This ensures all electrical, plumbing, and gas systems in our overlanding trailers use approved, certified components.
03. Off-Road Capability & Performance
What suspension system do your trailers use and why does it matter?
We use Timbren axle-less independent suspension on our overland travel trailers as standard. This allows each wheel to move independently, improving traction, tow stability, and durability while reducing stress on the trailer during off-road travel.
How do your trailers perform compared to traditional campers off-road?
Traditional campers are primarily designed for paved roads and campground use. Arkto Campers overland trailers are engineered for off-road travel, with stronger construction, better suspension, and higher ground clearance — making them more capable in remote environments.
04. Features, Layout & Practical Use
Can I add optional upgrades to my Arkto Campers trailer build?
Yes. Our trailers can be improved with a range of component upgrades or additions. You can customize your trailer using our Build Your Trailer 3D configurator to check out what options are available.
Do your trailers include an outdoor kitchen and storage solutions?
Yes. Our overland trailers include a functional outdoor kitchen and integrated storage designed for real travel. This allows you to cook, organize gear, and stay efficient during extended overlanding trips.
What is included in the base model of your trailers?
If you head to the Arkto Campers G12 or C10 pages, and scroll down to the Specifications section, all of the standard specifications and components that come standard with the trailers are listed there. You can also view the full specifications of our travel trailers by downloading the spec sheet on the above-noted pages, or by using our Build Your Trailer 3D configurator.
All listed components and specifications reflect what comes standard with our overlanding trailers. Only items listed under optional upgrades come at an additional cost.
What is the interior height and usable space in your trailers?
Both overland trailers are designed to maximize usable interior space. The G12 offers a more spacious interior in all three dimensions (width, length, and height) with a standing height of 6’8”, while the C10 provides a more compact layout with efficient use of vertical and horizontal space.
How much storage space do your overland trailers offer?
Arkto Campers overland travel trailers are designed with integrated storage compartments for all of your gear, tools, and travel essentials. Both the G12 and C10 offer some of the largest storage capacities for their class on the market.
Will the trailer fit in an 8-foot-tall garage?
Yes — if the approach angle from your driveway into your garage is relatively level, then the trailers should fit.
The G12 has an exterior height of approximately 7′ 10″ and the C10 has a height of 7’ 5”. These heights may fit in standard 8-foot tall garages, but clearance can be tight if the angle of approach going into your garage is too high. Always measure your garage opening and approach angle to ensure proper fit.

How does the buying process work for an Arkto Campers overland trailer?
Buying an Arkto Campers trailer is a straightforward, factory-direct process.
Start by contacting us by phone or email so we can discuss your needs, towing setup, and build timeline. We’ll then send a purchase agreement and build sheet where you can select options and configure your travel trailer.

During the construction process, we will begin coordinating with you to arrange for your trailer to be either picked up or shipped to your city. If you choose to pick up your trailer, you’ll receive a full walkthrough and orientation to get familiar with your new overlanding trailer. Alternatively, if shipping, we can also coordinate a virtual orientation with you.

Can I make changes to my build after placing an order?
Yes — you are allowed to make changes to your build sheet, right up to the submission of your 50% down payment. We ask that you make an attempt to solidify as many optional upgrades as possible, prior to this, to ensure there are no delays from component suppliers.
